Nan Xie joined the lab in 07/2014 and finished her PhD in 04/2018. Her project was “Morphine and Cancer Metastasis”. The purpose of her studies was to investigate the ability of morphine administration to modulate the risk of tumour growth and metastasis through μ-opioid receptor (MOR) or Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and matrix degradation. Key findings of her studies provide evidence that perioperative opioids are likely to influence inflammation and immunity by a previously unrecognized mechanism, and regulate the tumour microenvironment in a potentially protective fashion against long-term tumour recurrence and metastasis.
